'Iolani bounces back from loss to drop Waianae to 0-3

‘Iolani moved on from a lopsided loss without leaving it completely behind.

A week after absorbing a punishing 35-point defeat to Farrington, the Raiders turned their frustration into fuel for Saturday’s interleague game against Waianae.

"We used it as fire," ‘Iolani defensive lineman Jonah Like-Uehara said. "Everyone was amped for this game."

The seventh-ranked Raiders surrendered 396 yards, including 310 rushing, to the Seariders, but protected just enough at key moments to emerge with a 21-14 bounce-back win at Kozuki Stadium.

‘Iolani’s defensive effort complemented an efficient performance by quarterback Reece Foy, who threw for 319 yards and three touchdowns.

"We challenged them this week to see what kind of team we were going to be this season and what kind of character and personality we were going to have," ‘Iolani head coach Wendell Look said. "We responded pretty well."

‘Iolani’s dramatic swing in fortune hinged largely on a wild shift in momentum at the end of the first half of Saturday’s game.

With the score tied 7-7, Waianae recovered a fumble at its 3-yard line and marched 94 yards over the next 14 plays. An apparent 3-yard touchdown run by Jason Towne was negated by a face-mask penalty, and after an incomplete pass, a field-goal attempt went wide right with 1:52 left.

‘Iolani took over at its 20 and Foy hit Sheldon Gallarde for a 40-yard completion down the right side. The Raiders moved to the 25 and a nearly busted play on third and 16 turned into a touchdown reception for Tanner Nishioka with 8 seconds left in the half.

Nishioka and the slot receiver ran to the same area, bringing two Waianae defensive backs with them. But Foy’s pass somehow eluded the defenders’ swipes and nestled into Nishioka’s arms for the go-ahead score.

"I had practiced that route 50 times this week," said Foy, who completed 24 of 31 passes. "I had faith in him and I put it in an OK spot and he made a great play on the ball."

‘Iolani opened the second half with an 11-play drive capped by Foy’s third touchdown pass, a 29-yarder to Kasey Takahashi. Waianae needed just three plays to respond as Towne’s 49-yard run set up a 2-yard plunge by Leighton Panui.

‘Iolani lost a fumble on its next possession and Waianae plowed to the Raiders’ 2. But the Raiders stopped Panui at the 1 on fourth down to protect the lead.

"That was one of the challenges for them, to play together as a team," Look said. "When you play team defense like that, you can stop people."

‘Iolani stopped the Seariders again on fourth and 2 in the fourth quarter when they stuffed Kennedy Tulimasealii, a 286-pound defensive tackle who had lined up at fullback, at the line of scrimmage at the Raiders’ 30.

"There’s certain things I should have done," Waianae coach Danny Matsumoto said, taking responsibility for the calls that came up short. "Cannot blame our offense."

"We moved the ball from 20 to 20. But getting in the red zone, we had a hard time, and ‘Iolani played great defense, real solid defense."

Waianae got the ball back with 1:53 left in the game, but ‘Iolani (2-1) sealed the win on an interception by safety James Los Banos.

Waianae slotback Sean Stevens-Sadamaru led the Seariders’ ground game with 127 yards, while Towne finished with 95. But the Seariders (0-3) couldn’t get over the hump a week after losing to Campbell in overtime.

David Rasmussen threw three touchdown passes to Gavin Kim as the Falcons beat the Bulldogs.

Rasmussen was 20-for-33 for 320 yards, while Kim finished with seven completions for 177 yards. The pair’s third-quarter scoring pass covered 99 yards.
