Not surprisingly, Sony's two par-5 holes played easiest during the serene first round.
The 506-yard ninth hole gave up eight eagles and 77 birdies and played more than half a shot below par (4.417). All last year on tour, only two holes gave up more birdies than No. 9.
There were three eagles and 69 birdies at the 551-yard 18th, which averaged 4.507.
The 477-yard 13th played toughest yesterday. The average score on the par 4 was 4.431 -- higher than at No. 9 -- and there were 59 bogeys and three doubles.
Waialae's narrow fairways proved the most difficult to hit of any course on tour last year, with golfers good on just 47 percent of their tee shots. It has ranked among the 10 toughest on tour the past seven years.
