Following a perfect opening week, the Hawaii softball team moved down a spot in one of the national polls and up a place in the other.
The Rainbow Wahine checked in at No. 9 in the USA Today/NFCA poll released yesterday, down from eighth in the preseason ranking. They appeared at No. 12 in the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll, up from 13th to open the season. UCLA is first in both polls.
The Wahine went 5-0 last week to win the Oceanic Time Warner Cable Paradise Classic. They depart on their first road trip of the season today and will play in the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic starting Friday. They will play Utah, Long Beach State, No. 14 Oregon, No. 18/19 Stanford and Cal State Northridge in the tournament.
Jake Dastrup hit eight 3-pointers and finished with 31 points to lead Brigham Young-Hawaii to a 77-68 men's basketball victory over Dominican last night in San Rafael, Calif.
Heath Gameren and Jet Chang both added 11 points for the Seasiders (13-6, 8-2 Pacific West). BYUH squandered a 14-point lead in the second half and trailed 66-65 with less than 3 minutes left. But the Seasiders closed the game with a 12-2 run to seal the win.
BYUH's Richelle Rieben scored 14 points and had four assists in the Seasiders' 78-70 loss to Dominican in a Pacific West Conference women's basketball game last night.
The Seasiders (3-16, 2-8) rallied to tie the game 51-51 with less than 10 minutes left, but Dominican went on an 8-0 run to put the game out of reach. Kelsey Janusch led Dominican (7-17, 4-9) with 25 points.
Steven Bennett scored 16 points and Mamadou Diarra contributed 11 rebounds and three blocked shots in Chaminade's 55-46 men's basketball win over Notre Dame de Namur last night in Belmont, Calif.
De'Andre Haskins added 12 points for the Silverswords (15-7, 8-2 PacWest), who held the Argonauts (4-17, 2-9) to 26 percent shooting.
Patten University rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh inning to beat Hawaii-Hilo 6-5 yesterday at Wong Stadium in Hilo.
Patten's Alberto Gonzalez scored the go-ahead run on a passed ball with two out in the seventh and the Vulcans (1-1) went down in order in the bottom of the inning. Kris Cole picked up the win for Patten. UH-Hilo's Chris Pascual took the loss.
