Whippy PacWest player of year

Brigham Young-Hawaii senior guard Marques Whippy was named the player of the year in Pacific West Conference men's basketball yesterday.

Whippy was joined by fellow senior guard Jet Chang on the first team. Seasiders teammate Jake Dastrup, a junior guard, was named honorable mention.

Chaminade junior center Mamadou Diarra was named the PacWest newcomer of the year. He and Silverswords' senior guard Steven Bennett were named to the first team, while senior forward Shane Hanson was an honorable-mention pick.

Selected from Hawaii-Hilo were senior forward Justin Smith (first team) and senior guard Andrew Gipson (honorable mention). Senior forward Jason Jackson (first team) and senior forward Royal Edwards (honorable mention) were chosen from Hawaii Pacific.

Dixie State's Jon Judkins was named coach of the year and William Overton from Academy of Art freshman of the Year.

Seasiders sweep Silverswords

Freshman Gabby Hawkins tossed the school's first no-hitter in 10 years, leading Brigham Young-Hawaii to a 6-0 win over Chaminade in the second game of a PacWest softball doubleheader at the BYUH field.

The Seasiders (4-10, 2-2) won the opener 4-2, with sophomore Lauren Fielding's two-run triple in the fifth providing the winning runs. The Silverswords dropped to 5-11 and 1-5.

HPU names women's soccer coach

Gina Brewer, an assistant for the University of Hawaii women's soccer team the past three seasons, was named the head coach at Hawaii Pacific yesterday.

Brewer, who played at the University of Washington, also spent two seasons as an assistant at Utah State and one season as a graduate assistant at Idaho.

2 honored in PacWest baseball

Hawaii Pacific's Keanu Kapana was named the player of the week and Hawaii-Hilo's Ronnie Loeffler pitcher of the week in baseball by the Pacific West Conference yesterday.

Kapana, a catcher out of Campbell, helped the Sea Warriors go 3-1 last week, going 9-for-16 with seven RBIs and seven runs scored.

Loeffler, a right-hander out of Waiakea, tossed a three-hitter in a nine-inning complete-game victory over Grand Canyon. He struck out six and walked four in the 6-1 win.
