Honolulu's Stephanie Kono closed with a 4-under-par 68 to earn co-medalist honors yesterday at the NCAA Women's Golf Central Regional in South Bend, Ind. The UCLA junior had a three-day total of 218 to lead the second-ranked Bruins to the regional championship by four shots over LSU.
Kono, a Punahou graduate, birdied the last two holes to share top honors with LSU's Megan McChrystal, ranked No. 1 nationally by Golfstat.com. It was Kono's first win of the year and fourth top-five finish.
UCLA led wire-to-wire for its fifth win of the year. It earned a school-record 11th consecutive NCAA Championship berth. The nationals are May 18-21 at College Station, Texas.
