Freitas named to fitness board

University of Hawaii vice president for student affairs Rockne Freitas has been named to the inaugural nine-member board of directors for National Foundation on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition, Kathleen Sebelius, the U. S. Secretary of Health and Human Services, announced in Washington, D.C.

The foundation was established in December by President Barack Obama "to help secure funding and resource contributions" in support of "helping Americans get active, play sports and eat healthier," a release said.

Freitas, a Kamehameha Schools graduate, spent 11 years in the NFL (1968-78) and was selected to the Pro Bowl.

BYUH's Whippy is PacWest's best

Brigham Young-Hawaii basketball player Marques Whippy was selected as the Pacific West Conference Men's Athlete of the Year, as voted upon by the league's sports information directors.

Whippy, a senior from Bua, Fiji, was selected among the six players of the year in the PacWest this season. Hawaii Pacific baseball player Blake Amaral and Hawaii-Hilo golfer Blake Snyder were among the other candidates for the honor.

Whippy made the Basketball Times All-America Third Team after helping the Seasiders to a 22-9 record (12-4 PacWest) and their first NCAA Division II national championship game.

Whippy finished in the top 10 in seven major conference statistical categories, including rebounds (11.5, first), steals (2.8, first) and points per game (14.2, sixth).

HPU's Kim gains All-America honor

Hawaii Pacific designated hitter Maile Kim made honorable mention on the Daktronics, Inc., NCAA Division II All-America softball team.

The list of honorees was voted upon by D-II sports information directors from across the country.

Kim, a junior from Salinas, Calif., batted .387 with 46 RBIs in Pacific West Conference games. She earned all-league first-team honors for the third consecutive season.
