Moore wins at Bells

By Associated Press

POSTED:

Hawaii's Carissa Moore defeated Australia's Tyler Wright to capture the Rip Curl Women's Pro Bells Beach surf contest in Victoria, Australia, today.

The win in 3- to 5-foot waves vaulted Moore past Wright to the top of the Association of Surfing Professionals Women's World Tour rankings.

Moore, who won the world title in 2011, beat Wright 15.40 to 8.00.

"It feels great to be a part of the world title race again this year," Moore said. "Last year wasn't the greatest for me and it was an adjustment transitioning from going for a world title to defending one. I learned a lot though and I'm back this year feeling focused.

"To win Bells is a dream," she added. "As a little kid, you always looked forward to watching it and reading about it. The history and the prestige and the people who have won it are really legendary. To be a part of it now is really special."

In the men's contest, Kauai's Sebastien Zietz was eliminated in a third-round, 16.50 to 14.17 loss to Australia's Josh Kerr.
