Maiava, brother charged with assault

By Associated Press

POSTED:

Linebacker Kaluka Maiava is charged with assaulting two men during a brawl at a Maui bar.

Maiava, 27, and his brother Ilima Maiava, 30, are charged with third-degree assault, a misdemeanor, and fourth-degree criminal property damage, a petty misdemeanor, said Maui prosecuting attorney John Kim.

They are accused of beating up two men, ages 27 and 28, at Life’s a Beach in Kihei on March 17. That would be four days after the Oakland Raiders signed Kaluka Maiava to a three-year, $6 million contract.

He played four seasons with the Cleveland Browns after being a fourth-round pick out of Southern California.

Maiava’s agent couldn’t immediately be reached for comment on Wednesday. The brothers also couldn’t be reached. Raiders spokesman Will Kiss said the team had no comment.

After reviewing police reports and other evidence, prosecutors decided to go forward with criminal charges.

Maiava, of Wailuku, and his brother, who lives on Oahu, were not arrested. Each was served with a summons on July 2. The brothers are scheduled to be arraigned in Wailuku District Court on July 25, when they’re expected to enter pleas.

If convicted of the misdemeanor charge, they could face up to a year in jail and a $2,000 fine. The petty misdemeanor carries a maximum sentence of 30 days in jail and a $1,000 fine.

"5 games"? If convicted, he could get a year in prison. Stupid fool. He didn't think. He had a good contract. Stay out of a brawl. Stay out of bars.

True..the whole college football racket is really just a horrible embarrassment for American higher education. Things just continue to deteriorate. Hard to figure why this mediocre player risks his bloated salary to act out on Maui's bar scene. So much for character formation in college football.

How about treating him exactly like anyone else? Not representing one's employer well is not a crime. So, no favors and no extra punishment.

Kaluka should avoid doing anything that could cost him his contract in the NFL. Be a good boy and make the money while you can.
