The University of Hawaii softball team managed to scratch out enough runs to win its first five games in the Oceanic Time Warner Cable Paradise Classic.

The Rainbow Wahine offense came up short in game No. 6, and No. 16 Washington claimed the tournament title with a 3-1 win in the championship game on Saturday.

Home runs by Kaitlin Inglesby and Hooch Fagaly accounted for all of Washington’s scoring, and reliever Bryana Walker retired all 14 batters she faced to send No. 23/25 UH (5-1) to its first loss of the season.

"We need to have hitting become contagious and right now it’s not," UH coach Bob Coolen said.

UH senior Kaia Parnaby was instrumental in getting the Wahine into the title game by throwing three shutouts in the tournament, including a 2-0 win over Ole Miss in a semifinal game earlier Saturday afternoon.

Parnaby’s streak of scoreless innings to open the season ended at 271/3 when Inglesby launched a two-run homer in the top of the first. UH scored its lone run in the bottom of the first when Keiki Carlos drew a bases-loaded walk.

Fagaly added a solo shot in the third and Walker took care of the rest, snuffing a potential UH rally in the bottom of the third and shutting down the Wahine as the Huskies (4-2) avenged a 5-2 loss to UH on Friday.

"It’s a good sign for our team to come back on a championship day and treat it like an NCAA regional or a Super Regional where we lost the night before and had to win two games in a row," Washington coach Heather Tarr said.

Parnaby was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Pitcher after going 3-1 with two saves in six appearances. She threw 312/3 innings over the weekend with 39 strikeouts against three walks, while Carlos went 2-0 while throwing 101/3 innings over two starts and a relief appearance on Saturday.

"That’s huge," Coolen said of Parnaby’s three shutouts. "She has to be very on top of her condition, her optimal playing condition from here on out."

Offensively, the Wahine hit .191 over the tournament. They leave Tuesday on their first road trip of the season to the Easton Desert Classic in Las Vegas. UH will play six games over four days in the tournament, including matchups against No. 5 Oregon and No. 19 UCLA.

"We won five games, which is awesome and that’s the way you want to start the season, but definitely didn’t hit the way we wanted to," senior center fielder Kelly Majam said.

"We’re capable of getting way more hits than we got this weekend, so that’s something we’re definitely going to work on going into next week. Defense, we did really good, our pitching was phenomenal, and we won five games and we shouldn’t hang our heads."

UH manufactured two runs against Ole Miss to get into the final, with Sharla Kliebenstein scoring the go-ahead run in the fifth inning on a double steal.

Parnaby escaped a bases-loaded jam in the sixth, thanks to a 5-2-3 double play, and UH added an insurance run on Jessica Iwata’s sacrifice fly.
