Maryknoll’s just fine from line in win

Top-ranked Maryknoll, riding a 27-for-32 night at the foul line, saw a 13-point, fourth-quarter lead nearly evaporate before edging No. 5 Kamehameha 63-55 on Wednesday night at T.C. Ching Gymnasium.

Josh Burnett hustled for 23 points and three steals to lead the Spartans.

“He shot well after starting slow. They’re talented and deep,” Kamehameha coach Julian Nakanishi said. “I don’t think they missed a free throw all game until the last quarter.”

The Spartans felt fortunate to get a win, struggling against Kamehameha’s halfcourt traps in the second half.

“I’m happy we won, but we worked on our jump (trap) plays all week, all month, all season, but not until  you see it first-hand, you don’t realize how effective it is,” Maryknoll coach Kelly Grant said. “This was the full wrath of Kamehameha. It was a good experience. If this happened at Kamehameha, they would’ve won by 10. We can shoot free throws here.”

Maryknoll was 12-for-12 from the line until the fourth quarter, when it shot 15-for-20 to finish at 84 percent for the game.

The home crowd had hardly the size and enthusiasm of the Spartans’ previous home game, a 70-66 win over rival Punahou a week earlier. Maryknoll (16-1) improved to 4-0 in ILH play despite a near breakdown in the final quarter. Kamehameha (11-7) dropped to

2-2 in league play after shooting 39 percent from the field (22-for-57) in Maryknoll’s air-conditioned facility. That included 3-for-21 shooting from the 3-point line.

“We’re having trouble putting the ball in the hole lately. We need better decision-making, better passing, knowing when to dribble and not to,” Nakanishi said. “It’s the basketball IQ plays that we need.”

Still, the Warriors, who won the state title in 2009 and ’11, made things interesting. Burnett nailed two of his three treys in the second quarter as Maryknoll opened a 29-19 lead at the break.

The home team, which never trailed in the second half, had a

52-39 lead after Hyrum Harris’ free throws with 6:07 to play. Kamehameha’s halfcourt traps, which weren’t deployed until the second half, began to take a toll on the Spartans.

Noa Kinimaka’s trey from the corner triggered an 11-0 run by the Warriors. Forward Kody Chai (13 points) scored underneath on feeds from Austin Gerard and Makoa Camanse-Stevens, and after Camanse-Stevens (18 points) scored on a steal, Kamehameha was within 52-50 with 3:26 remaining.

But Maryknoll’s man-to-man defense, its pillar for much of the season, rose up. After Harris hit two more foul shots, Burnett blocked a 3-point try and sank two more foul shots for the Spartans.

Kamehameha shot 2-for-13 from beyond the arc in the final quarter, allowing Maryknoll to pull away. After a layup by Kaleb Gilmore (14 points), Burnett picked the ball away from Camanse-Stevens and Danny Danbara hit a free throw for a 61-54 lead with 27 seconds left.

The visitors got no closer the rest of the way.

“In the beginning of the game, we were very patient, but in the second half, we started forcing up shots a little too fast in our offense,” Burnett said.

Maryknoll shot 42 percent from the field (15-for-36) and had 14 turnovers.

It was a strange loss for the Warriors, who allowed just three combined shots by Maryknoll’s bigs, 6-foot-9 Tobias Schramm (one point, nine rebounds) and the 6-5 Harris (10 points, 12 boards). Kamehameha committed just nine turnovers, but was outrebounded 34-19.

The Spartans made Camanse-Stevens, a hard-driving, 6-4 guard, work extra hard for open looks. Camanse-Stevens added six assists, four steals and three boards, but also shot 8-for-20 from the field and missed all seven of his 3-point tries.

Maryknoll’s spark plug off the bench, Tobias Powell, suffered a left leg injury and did not return. The coaching staff expected Powell to get an X-ray after the game.

“Toby’s our most dynamic player. He can play 1 through 4 and he makes good decisions with the ball,” Grant said.
