For three quarters, the ‘Iolani Raiders clawed and battled, hoping their long-range game would show up.
Second-ranked Maryknoll made sure that big run never materialized. The Spartans got 14 points and 14 rebounds from Tobias Schramm, and their man-to-man defense limited the host Raiders to 4-for-22 shooting from 3-point range in a 61-43 win on Saturday night.
It was the Interscholastic League of Honolulu regular-season opener for both teams. Maryknoll is now
13-1 overall, its only loss coming against G.W. Carver (Ala.) more than two weeks ago. The Spartans overcame two first-half technical fouls.
"Give them credit. They play all 32 minutes, in your face," Maryknoll coach Kelly Grant said. "Our kids got a little rattled with the technicals, but we told them to just be patient. We took some ill-advised shots."
Schramm, originally from Germany, is in his second year at Maryknoll. His verbal presence stands out on a team of relatively quiet players.
"That’s what I’m trying to do, be a leader. It’s senior year," said Schramm, who shot 8-for-8 from the foul line, all in the second half.
‘Iolani, coming off two losses in the Shooting Touch Shootout in Boston, is 7-5 overall. The fourth-ranked Raiders returned from the East Coast on Wednesday night jet-lagged and under the weather, but coach Dean Shimamoto refused to discount Maryknoll’s defense.
"I’d say about 75 percent of our shots were good shots. They funnel people into their bigs. We knew we weren’t going to get a lot of layup opportunities," Shimamoto said, referring to the 6-foot-9 Schramm and
6-5 Hyrum Harris. "We knew we had to get outside shots on kicks."
Joshua Burnett, a 6-3 swingman, added 13 points and showed no effects of the wrist injury he suffered against Carver during the Punahou Invitational. Guard Kaleb Gilmore added 12 points and three steals, delivering key blows to ‘Iolani’s comeback hopes with transition drives to the rack.
But depth was also in Maryknoll’s favor. Guards Danny Danbara (six points) and Tobias Powell (seven) solidified the Spartans’ press breakers against ‘Iolani’s hustling fullcourt press. Powell was especially tough leading the break, delivering three of his five assists in the final quarter as the visitors put the game out of reach.
"Danny and that trio of guards is tough. They can handle it and they can push it," Shimamoto said.
The Spartans shot 59 percent from the field (22-for-37), including 4-for-7 from the 3-point arc. They outrebounded ‘Iolani 31-15.
The Raiders got 13 points from Zach Buscher and 12 from Ikaika Phillip. Otherwise, it was a cold night with 11-for-48 shooting (23 percent) from the field. The only edges came at the free-throw line (17-for-23 to Maryknoll’s 13-for-21) and on ball security. ‘Iolani had 11 turnovers to Maryknoll’s 16.
‘Iolani never led, but stayed close for a half. The game was physical, with a bunch of pileups on loose balls, and the Spartans were whistled twice for technical fouls. One came in the first quarter when Burnett dunked the ball and hung on the rim — after an official had blown the play dead a few seconds earlier.
"I didn’t hear the whistle. I just went baseline. It was open," said Burnett, a mild-mannered junior who has become one of the most explosive leapers in the state.
Chris Gallacher’s layup on a Marc Ma pass cut Maryknoll’s lead to 14-13 early in the second quarter, but Maryknoll went on a 9-1 run, scoring on a steal and layup by Gilmore, a sophomore.
But a moment after that bucket, Harris went after a loose ball in the corner and put his rugby sense on display, clearing out an ‘Iolani player.
"He told me he thought it was OK to run over the guy since it was a loose ball," Grant said. "I told him, ‘You can’t do that.’ "
Harris earned a personal foul on the play, but Powell was tagged with a tech for saying something inappropriate after the collision.
Phillips hit four foul shots in a row as a result of the foul and tech, and after Reece Foy sank two free throws, the Raiders were within 23-20. Maryknoll closed the first half with an 8-3 run, then opened the second half with a 9-4 mini-blitz.
After Gilmore swished a trey from the right wing, Maryknoll had a 45-31 lead late in the third quarter. ‘Iolani got no closer than 10 the rest of the way.
