Tax hike proposed to fund stadium at UNLV

LAS VEGAS >> Officials are throwing around the idea of increasing the sales tax throughout Clark County to raise money for a proposed stadium at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

UNLV stadium board member and regent James Dean Leavitt also suggested raising the hotel room tax on the Las Vegas Strip to help fund the project.

Leavitt said the university, the resort industry and all of Clark County would reap the benefits of a stadium.

Costs for the project range from $523 million for an open-air, shaded venue of 42,000 seats, to $833 million for a domed stadium of 60,000 seats.

Opponents at a stadium board meeting Wednesday said raising the sales tax would disproportionately hurt people on fixed incomes.

Any tax increase must first be approved by the Legislature.
