FOXBOROUGH, Mass.>> The Patriots acquired receiver Greg Salas from St. Louis on Saturday, claimed offensive lineman Matt Tennant off waivers from New Orleans, and released linebacker Bobby Carpenter.

Salas, 24, was drafted by St. Louis in the 2011 fourth round out of Hawaii, and New England surrendered an undisclosed draft pick for him. He played in six games for the Rams last season, finishing with 27 receptions for 269 yards.

Tennant, 25, is a two-year veteran, and was drafted by the Saints in the 2010 fifth round out of Boston College. He was released by New Orleans on Friday, after playing in 28 games for the Saints at center and guard.

Carpenter, 29, a former Ohio State standout, is a veteran of six seasons with Dallas, Miami and Detroit. He joined the Patriots as an unrestricted free agent April 5, and has played in 89 NFL games.

New England opens the season Sept. 9 at Tennessee.

Salas is the ideal slot receiver candidate to back up Wes Welker. Good hands, runs crisp routes, can be physical against smaller corners. Fast enough the beat a LB on a slant from the slot.

It's as if he belongs there and it is his destiny. Salas will augment the Patriots passing game with his speed and tenacity. Good for him and the Patriots.

fish: why on Earth would you rather have Salas go to the Redskins? Salas has the realistic possibility of someday becoming an All-Pro with Brady throwing to him. The Redskins have had zero direction the whole time they have been owned by Snyder. And everyone keep in mind: Belicheck (and OC McDaniels) cut Branch, Gaffney, Stallworth, all experienced WRs, only to trade for Salas. They wouldn't do that unless they have definite plans to use Salas.
