Colorado State and New Mexico explore leaving Mountain West

Colorado State and New Mexico are talking about the possibility of bolting the Mountain West Conference and forming a new conference, CBSSports.com reported today.

Both were among the schools that broke up the old 16-team Western Athletic Conference with their defections following the 1998 season. That led to the creation of the MWC in 1999.

CBSSports.com said the two "have shown preliminary but informal interest in forming a new conference that would have Boise State and/or Brigham Young as its foundation."

UH joined the MWC in 2012 after 32 years in the WAC.

CBSSports.com said the CSU and New Mexico talks "might be a reciprocal answer to the Big East's move" in which reports had that conference talking to Fresno State and Nevada-Las Vegas.

Mountain West is a minor league division. I cannot blame good schools like CSU and NM wanting to elave

Albert/Alfred/Allie aka HIGH SCHOOL DROPOUT POSING AS A UH CO-ED. For someone that keeps claiming to not care about sports you pay an unusual amount of time following UH sports and for someone who claims to want to concentrate of academics you should a conspicuous lack of any scholastic aptitude whatsoever. So tell us allie the dolt since it's obvious your'e a closet fan of UH sports and follow it feverishly, why do you publicly try to disparage it but by your actions you prove that you can't get enough and that UH sports get you into a highly excited state? Why is this?

Are you crazy ????? The MWC is a solid Mid-Major conference. Where do you get your info from because you sure don't know your sports.....CSU and NM leaving the MWC would be a huge mistake on their part. Why would schools like Boise State and BYU want to be a foundation for them ????? Makes no sense like your comment

Now why would BYU give up their independent status to join the doormats? Who else would they invite; New Mexico State?

Meanwhile Pete Thamel from Sports Illustrated is tweeting that three sources have told him Boise State's return to the MWC is "inevitable". And ESPN's Andy Katz is reporting in his blog that Boise State is in discussions with the MWC to return to the conference, and that all of the schools slated to be in the MWC in 2013 (including UH) have made a commitment to stick with the conference "at this juncture" which presumably means not accepting invitations from what's left of the Big East. Fun times.

how is this even possible when the MWC is having a diologe with Boise State (ESPN confirmed) for possible return to the conference instead of joining the Big East. An idea of creating their new conference is a crazy talk, the fact that MWC is already having a hard time trying to keep Boise State and San Diego State in the conference. Who are they going to invite? Fresno State, UNLV, Nevada, Utah State, San Jose State, New Mexico State... sounds like it's just changing the name...

It has been reported that both Boise St and San Diego St will be invited to join the PAC 12. For Boise St to join Colorado St and New Mexico in forming a new conference is absurd. Well, not unless they see an invite to the PAC 12 as a very remote chance and the idea of crawling back to the Mountain West is more than their ego can handle.

Don't think PAC 12 would want Boise St.- they look at the whole package, other sports programs, academics- Boise doesn't have it- other PAC 12 schools have not looked favorably on this- its been documented- But then again, who knows?

I think Colorado State and New Mexico should leave to make room for BYU & Boise State what an improvement that would make. Take Allie Sherman with them.
