University of Hawaii athletic director Ben Jay announced today that all UH men's intercollegiate sports teams would be nicknamed Warriors and all women's teams Rainbow Wahine beginning July 1.

Jay announced the decision this afternoon at Les Murakami Stadium just as the baseball team took the field for practice.

The baseball team was the only men's team to specifically go by Rainbows without any mention of Warriors.

"In terms of the change for our teams, we're going to probably implement that immediately," Jay said.

A UH spokesperson clarified later this afternoon that the actual change won't take place until the July 1 deadline, saying, "We’re going to start the process of changing the nickname but it’s not going to take effect until July 1."

This is how we know Jay is not local. If he was local, he would have heard "I'm a Rainbow Fan". If he was local, he would know enough not to alienate the older season ticket holders which, history has proven, have supported the "Rainbow Warrior" football team during the Von Appen dark years, as well as the June Jones years, and would probably be the only truly loyal supporters during Chow time as well. Way to dis your heart and soul, Ben!

The University of Hawaii sought to get a big time AD and we truly got the Grand Prize and he is doing his job already, and he is doing it extremely well and we are getting our money's worth, already... You sound like you still have a rotary dial telephone and a 19" tv with a rabbit-ear antenna.

As bad as he was, even Donovan was smart enough not to mess with the essence of the "brand". And its a 12" inch TV, thank you very much.

I don't think you speak for all of us old timers. Change happens and it happened when the name was Fighting Deans and I wonder if the old timers than complained too. You support the team because it is still the University of Hawaii despite the nickname. We move forward for the ideas that is best for the University that will keep our athletic programs viable and strong. You are also making an assumption that he does not know the local history of the University.

Instead of "Go Bows!" it will be IMUA! ... In fact, it's already on the back of their new football jerseys. Hmmmm ...."Warriors" ......"Imua".......where did that come from?

I guess they didn't want to go the gender equity route and call the mens' teams Kane. Although that might bring to mind a huge 7 foot guy dressed in red and black who wears a mask.

It's a good local high school name but it would not be as attractive to potential recruits, as pride and confidence building to our players, and as intimidating to our adversaries. I'm pretty sure that if you asked June Jones when he thought of re-naming University of Hawaii Athletics to WARRIORS, he would tell you that it was while he was the rainbows quarterback.

That's what we paid this guy the big bucks for? I already don't like him. "Where I live - there are Rainbows", and a lot of great Super Bowl Champion and at least one great NBA Champion Rainbows (Warriors). Specifically here in Hawaii, intolerance has always trumped ignorance. How's about some soap in the show, Ben Gay?

This is a mistake. UH has to pick names that exude success and power. The basketball team should be named "Tar Heels", and the football team "Crimson Tide".

Perplexing decision. Too bad the article doesn't say if there was a rationale provided. If the students were overwhelmingly demanding it, that would be important. That said, the new AD should have been to enough men's and women's games in the Stan Sheriff Center to hear the crowd's enthusiastic "Let's Go Bows" chants. Going with Rainbow Warriors & Rainbow Wahine would have seemed a logical choice. Warrior Football could survive just fine ... with wins.

I wholeheartedly agree with Ben Jay action to make the Hawaii logo, Warriors!!! Although I, myself go back many years with Hawaii football when they were called Rainbows (Bows). Memories of Head Coach Larry Price, with his players Waianae's Levi Stanley, Casey Ortez; Coach Dave Holmes had Golden Richards; Coach Dick Tomey had Jesse Sapolo, Gary Allen, Mark Tuinei to name just a few, Coach Bob Wagner had Garrett Gabriel, Derek Branch just to name a few. I'm sure all these player and coaches will always be know as the "Bows." But personally, I really like "Warriors" as our logo for our football, baseball and Basketball team.

What a shame to lose the Rainbow Warriors...it may seem like a step forward but it's not. The Rainbow & Bow's are so unique to Manoa and showed our Aloha. I wonder if we could have a survey or official poll about the name change preference...involve the local people in the decision... Maybe even going back to the Green & White colors... Laters
