University of Hawaii senior Kaia Parnaby added a national award to her collection of conference honors today.

The Rainbow Wahine pitcher was named USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Week following a record-breaking performance over the weekend.

Parnaby broke UH's single-game strikeout record with 17 in a win over Syracuse in the championship game of the Chevron Spring Fling Tournament on Saturday. In the process, she became the nation's first 20-game winner this season.

She had tied the previous strikeout record of 15 twice this season before making it her own with an eight-inning relief appearance on Saturday. She went 6-1 over the week with a 0.41 earned-run average.

Along with leading the nation in wins, Parnaby also ranks ninth in earned-run average (0.98), 11th in walks allowed per seven innings (0.90) and 26th in strikeouts per seven innings (9.2).

Parnaby (20-3) earned Big West Softball Pitcher of the Week honors for the third time this season on Monday and was named College Sports Madness National Pitcher of the Week.

Kaia Parnaby is not only receiving national recognition as a work horse, but, is also in contention for the triple crown of college softball--wins, era and strikeouts.Heading into conference play, Parnaby is looking like a Secretariat. Although, Kealani Ricketts is the head-on favorite, she has thrown under 60% the innings (97:163) that Parnaby has hurled in the circle. If Kaia can close with the same excellence and strength in the next 25 games as she has in the first 29, she has my support for Pitcher of the Year.
