UH running back will have surgery on foot

By Stephen Tsai

University of Hawaii running back Joey Iosefa will undergo a foot-stabilizing procedure that will require about four weeks of recovery, head football coach Norm Chow confirmed today.

Iosefa missed the Rainbow Warriors' training camp and first two games because of a fracture in his left foot. He suffered the injury while training in July.

At the time, Iosefa opted for non-surgical rehabilitation.

Iosefa said he "tweaked" his left foot on UH's opening drive of a 31-9 loss to Nevada this past weekend.

This time, Iosefa decided to undergo a procedure in which a pin will be inserted into his left foot.

There is a likelihood Iosefa will be ready for the two-game road trip against Utah State and Navy in early November.

"We tried (non-surgical rehabilitation)," Chow said. "It didn't work. Let's get it done from here. (The procedure) will fix him once and for all."

UH plays 25th-ranked Fresno State at Aloha Stadium this Saturday.

UH has Pacific Health whatever insurance now. So UH can afford to have surgeries done, and the Team Orthos are willing to do them.

I'm not sure exactly what it's called, either a medical hardship or a medical redshirt, but maybe coach Chow should think about doing this for Iosefa. By the time he's ready, how much of the season will be left, and would he make that much of an impact on the remaining games/season. I can see if a winning season or participation in the Hawaii Bowl is at stake, then, maybe. But I think by the time he's ready, those questions might be answered. Having him gain another year in the program might be more beneficial to him and the program. As John Fink says "Think About It".
