Thousands participate in a soggy Great Aloha Run

By Star-Advertiser staff

LAST UPDATED: 06:01 p.m. HST, Feb 17, 2014

Thousands of runners participated in the Great Aloha Run from Aloha Tower to Aloha Stadium on a soggy Monday morning.

Roads along the 8.15-mile route -- Nimitz Highway to Kamehameha Highway to Center Drive, Radford Drive and Salt Lake Boulevard to the stadium -- were closed until the race finished.

Parts of Ala Moana Boulevard and South Street, used as a staging area for the start of the run, were also closed until just after the official 7 a.m. start.

Runners saw cloudy skies and light showers Monday morning for the race.

The forecast for Honolulu called for vog, widespread light rain, southeast Kona winds about 20 mph and highs in the low 70s.

The race started at 6:55 a.m. with the "Sounds of Freedom," military units running in formation.

This is the 30th year for the run, which raises fitness awareness and money for charity.

No exact number? Doesn't everyone register? Other events give exact numbers.

Registering is one thing but showing up for the event is another especially when the weather was bad this morning.
