The University of Hawaii football team has received an oral commitment from one of the top high school players in American Samoa.

Eperone Moananu, a Tafuna High School junior, told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser he has accepted a football scholarship from UH, will sign a national letter of intent in February, and join the Rainbow Warriors for the 2015 season.

Moananu is UH's third commitment for the 2015 class, following offensive tackle Jordan Agusiva of Mililani High and linebacker Jonah Moi of Riverside Community College.

Moananu is 6 feet 2 and 290 pounds. Scouting services rate Moananu is the second-best offensive lineman and one of the top-five prospects in American Samoa.

Offensive line coach Chris Naeole is the point recruiter. Naeole was a player at the University of Colorado when he met Okland Salavea, a Buffalo alumnus. Salavea, now Tafuna's head coach, has led his team to consecutive championships.

Samoans and Tongans and maybe other Pacific Islanders are the biggest people in the world, they seem built for football. They're probably twice the size of the average asian person.

Good, the new coaching staff in 2015 at least may have something to build on.
