Hawaii Bowl looking for new title sponsor

By Star-Advertiser Staff

LAST UPDATED: 12:07 p.m. HST, May 09, 2014

The Hawaii Bowl will continue to be played on Dec. 24 but Sheraton Hotels will no longer be the title sponsor, officials announced on Friday.

Sheraton had been title sponsor for 11 years and will remain as "official hotel sponsor," officials said.

The game is owned and operated by ESPN Regional TV, which said it is talking to several candidates about title sponsorships.

It will be the 10th time in the game's 13-year history that it will be played on Christmas Eve. Kickoff for the nationally-televised event is scheduled for 3 p.m. on ESPN.

The game is scheduled to match representatives from the Mountain West Conference and Conference USA. The University of Hawaii will represent the Mountain West if the Rainbow Warriors win at least seven of their 13 regular-season games.

I really don't like it but most of the major stadiums on the mainland have a corporate name. They pay big bucks for the continued advertising--might give it a try??? Hawaiian Airlines???

Well, can't blame Sheraton Hotels for skipping out as title sponsor. With the Hawaii football team struggling and not likely to have a winning season for the foreseeable future, it's going to be difficult to sell tickets to the game without Hawaii playing in the bowl. Challenge to stay financially afloat....

I think most of the profit goes to charity anyway, so less money for those organizations the less tickets they sell.

Since Chevron is making a killing off the Hawaii residence, why not them?

Sheraton continues as hotel sponsor? That takes out hotel chains as potential title sponsors. This is being sold as a "National" sponsorship opportunity - one which can capitalize on the feel good atmosphere of the Holiday Season and Island happiness for entities in need of positive National perceptions. SO, here are my Top 10 new names that wouldn't surprise me: 10) The General Motors Bowl; 9) The Target Bowl (tickets sales cash only); 8) The San Jose International Airport Bowl; 7) The Time Warner Cable Customer Service Bowl; 6) The IPad Mini Bowl; 5) The Malaysian Airlines Bowl; 4) The Fracking Association of America Bowl; 3) The Donald Sterling Bowl; 2) The VA Bowl; 1) The Obamacare Bowl.

Its not a game that brings a lot of attention or money unless U.H. is playing and U.H. hasn't even been close to getting there.

Most corporate sponsors want to support a consistently winning team. I guess we could always sell out to the Monsanto Bowl.

Don't blame them. Hawaii is never going back to this bowl game as long as Chow remains head coach. Ratings for this game was consistently high for a non-major bowl when JJ was coach and ESPN was happy with the money they were making and Sheraton was happy with the ratings.
