MMA fighter taken to hospital after Ohio bout

By Associated Press

LAST UPDATED: 04:41 a.m. HST, May 12, 2014

CINCINNATI >> A mixed martial arts fighter was taken out on a stretcher at the end of a Saturday night fight and then to a Cincinnati hospital for evaluation.

Ultimate Fighting Championship President Dana White told reporters soon after the fight that Erick Silva would be examined for a possible concussion and fractured jaw.

The referee declared Xenia, Ohio, native Matt Brown the winner by technical knockout at 2:11 of the third round at the U.S. Bank Arena. Silva was down and bloodied after a barrage of punches, elbows and kicks.

There was no update available immediately Sunday from the UFC on the Brazilian fighter's condition.

Professional mixed martial arts include elements of wrestling, judo, boxing and kickboxing by fighters wearing fingerless gloves and no headgear.

with all the recent information on head trauma, I can't believe that boxing and MMA fighting hasn't gotten more criticism. If headers in soccer can lead to increased risk of getting LGD, we really need to reassess what we are willing to risk in the name of entertainment and recreation.

Too gruesome for me, just like the gladiators of old where the emperor would signal the victor whether to take the loser's life by the the turn of his thumb, up or down.

This fight may well go down as the best fight of the year. Silva almost finished Brown in the 1st round with a kick to the stomach, hammer fist strikes to the temple, but couldn't turn the neck crank into a rear naked choke. Brown truly lived up to his nickname " The Immortal". After the fight he commented that he's not sure what kept Silva standing after he landed clean punches to the jaw and temple.

It's a shame that the lowest common denominator of the martial arts- hurting someone else- has been elevated to such a level in our society. Someone is going to die- it's just a matter of time.

Athletes die in football, basketball, baseball, swimming, boxing, and every other sport out there. Should we ban all sports? People die walking down the street, driving their car, taking a shower, at church, in schools, everywhere. Let parents parent their kid. Let adults make their own choices. MMA fighters are commonly taken to hospital for injuries and as a precaution. There have been athletes in other sports who weren't, deciding not to, and ended up dead due to unseen injuries. The UFC really does take care its' fighters. (They just need to pay 'em more :)
