Former University of Hawaii football player Charles Clay told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser he has signed a free-agent contract with the Green Bay Packers.

Clay was not selected in this year's National Football League draft. But he was invited to audition at the Packers' rookie camp this past weekend. Clay did well enough to receive a three-year contract, the standard deal for an undrafted free agent.

Clay was told he will compete at safety, nickelback and on special teams.

Clay is a 2009 Hilo High graduated who attended Southern Methodist University as a wide receiver for two years. He then transferred to UH in 2011, where he switched to defensive back.

Clay caught the Packers' attention when he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.4 seconds at UH's pro day in March. The Packers had hand-timed Clay at 4.43 seconds.

Clay will train in Green Bay through mid-June before the rookies are allowed a three-week break ahead of the opening of training camp.
