Schools target UH football coaching alumni

The merry-go-round of former University of Hawaii assistant football coaches might not be over yet.

Army announced today it has hired Georgia Southern head coach Jeff Monken, a former UH graduate assistant coach, to replace Rich Ellerson as the Black Knights' head coach.

Ellerson is also a former UH assistant and player.

Meanwhile, Georgia Southern has reportedly asked permission to interview Navy offensive coordinator Ivin Jasper, also a former UH quarterback and assistant coach.

Jasper, who played at UH from 1991 through '93, helping the Rainbow Warriors to the 1992 Holiday Bowl, is also reportedly under consideration for the head coaching vacancy at The Citadel.

"Ivin is very deserving of the interest being shown in him," said Navy head coach Ken Niumatalolo. "I would hate to lose him but every assistant dreams of some day becoming a head coach."

Niumatalolo is also a former UH quarterback and 'Bows' assistant coach.

Dino Babers, a former UH defensive back, last week was named head coach at Bowling Green. He had been the head coach at Eastern Illinois for two seasons.

Wow! All these former UH alumni have paid their dues and are now reaping the rewards. Too bad Chow wants to do the same thing but with former Utah players. However they don't have the kind of resume of These former Bows. That's what we get for not thinking outside the box.

Aren't all these guys essentially coming out of Wagner (and to a lesser degree, Tomey) eras? Makes sense. Tomey was classy (just not a winner who could get his teams to championship level), and Wagner was pure class and a championship coach. Still eats at my that Donovan had a continuous affiliation with UH after Wagner was cut loose. Yoshida, Frazier then Donovan did nothing but slowly degrade UH athletics. Wagner's character alone could have built UH up instead of degrading it the way it turned out.

If Norm Chow doesn't pick up Rich Miano for defense coordinator, he would be out of his mind. Miano knows how to recruit in Hawaii, because of his training programs and respect of the kids' parents.

Miano was under JJ then fat Mac for total of 10 years or more so name me couple of great local recruits he's remembered for. Can't name many? - that's because there weren't too many. JJ built the program with local players who were either overlooked by other schools or not highly recruited - remember Milano was put in charge of walk ons. Further, the failure of fat Mac was largely due to drastic drop in quality recruits, of which Milano was a part of. So please get over this nonsense pining for Miano, or Rolo, or Amanda or any others with what you perceive as "local" connection.

But Ben Jay is to intent on destroying UH athletics to hire Dino Babers.

Chow has done enough to destroy UH football already. Jay should have hired Babers last week, before Bowling Green got to him.

Stay on course with Norm. The offense is working , he just needs to get the defense together. Go Rainbow Warriors!

are you joking? Chow took an average team and made them just about the worse team in the nation in 2 years. That's got to be some kind of record.

Coaches being hired from an era of 25 to 35 years ago, hardly seems like a positive. I guess when the current product is such a complete disaster, you have to look for something positive.
