UH announces football schedule

By Ferd Lewis

LAST UPDATED: 10:27 a.m. HST, Mar 02, 2012

The University of Hawaii football team will have two sets of back-to-back road games in its inaugural season in the Mountain West Conference, it was announced today.

The Warriors, who open their season Sept. 1 at Southern California, will make their MWC debut Sept. 22 against Nevada at Aloha Stadium under new head coach Norm Chow.

The Warriors will then play  at Brigham Young Sept. 29 and at San Diego State Oct. 6.

"It's awfully exciting yet it will be a very challenging schedule," Chow said in a statement. "The conference is such that we don't have to travel too far but it is still very difficult and that's what we expected now that we've moved to the next level. I told our players about it this morning and they were fired up and excited to get this thing started."

The second set of consecutive road games comes with an Oct. 27 appearance at Colorado State and a Nov. 3 meeting at Fresno State.

UH is still looking for a non-conference game to complete a 13-game schedule and has two open dates, Sept. 8 or Oct. 20, in which to slot it.

Not much of a home schedule, as Boise is only game with a top 25 opponent. With West Virginia leaving Big East this June, many of the remaining Big East football teams are looking for opponents. We should be looking for home and home with BCS caliber teams instead of Lamar and South Alabama.

Too bad we couldn't get a game with Notre Dame to end the season. It would have been nice for Manti and Robby to play one game at home in front of all their family and friends.

No big deal they had a choice to (chance) play ALL of them here. Choose and WIN or Choose and LOSE.

Oh great!! We get to watch UH play those three powerhouses, Lamar, New Mexico, and South Alabama at Aloha Stadium. Bet the place will be packed and rocking for those games!! Guess I gotta go make reservations for those away games at USC, BYU, and Air Force.

A fairly tough road schedule ahead. For this year, if we can at least make it to, and maybe even win the Hawaii Bowl, I'll be satisfied. Then hopefully if we can gradually get to the next level (become the next Boise State), that would be good.
