Josh Burnett provided a game-saving block in the final seconds of regulation, then scored five of his 21 points in overtime as No. 1 Maryknoll escaped with a 55-51 win over No. 2 Punahou on Saturday afternoon.
Kaleb Gilmore had 19 points and four assists for Maryknoll, which improved to 9-1 and clinched first place in the ILH regular season with one game remaining (at Kamehameha). A win by Punahou would have kept the race wide open. Instead, Punahou dropped to 6-3 (21-3 overall).
"It’s always a good time when you win. We made some adjustments so that we weren’t reacting to what they were doing. We made them react to what we were doing. We wanted to dictate," Burnett said, recalling a homecourt loss to Punahou two weeks ago. "We played very good defense, so that’s what separated us. We just limited everything they could do on offense."
Maryknoll, the defending league champion, will be the top seed in the ILH tournament and have homecourt advantage.
"We did a lot of changes. They exploited us a lot on pick-and-rolls last time," Maryknoll coach Kelly Grant said. "From that game, we started working on pick-and-roll defense, we put in a 1-3-1 defense, we put in a conversion man-to-zone defense just to try to confuse their guys."
Punahou may have to seek a state berth via the league tourney without forward Micah Ma’a. The springy 6-foot-3 junior injured his ankle with 2:46 left in regulation and finished with seven points, eight rebounds and a block.
"Losing Micah, he’s kind of our glue guy. We’ve got guys that can do it. We’ve got to change roles," Punahou coach Darren Matsuda said. "Micah is probably our best on-ball defender."
J.B. Kam led Punahou with 15 points, adding five boards and three blocks. Daniel Andrews tallied 13 points, nine caroms and two swats, and point guard Dayson Watanabe finished with 11 points.
Free-throw shooting was a big factor. The visitors shot 56 percent (10-for-18) while the home team hit only 40 percent (6-for-15) of its charity shots.
"Those were our best free-throw shooters, too," Matsuda said.
A raucous crowd of about 1,500 took in the battle between cross-street rivals. The game was moved up to a 3 p.m. tip-off due to a seventh-grade dance scheduled that night at Hemmeter Fieldhouse.
Burnett did no dancing and was all business, adding seven rebounds and two blocks. Burnett, a 6-foot-3 senior, swished an NBA-range 3-pointer to tie the game at 46 with 44 seconds left in regulation. With three ticks on the clock, he blocked a layup attempt by Watanabe to preserve Maryknoll’s chance to win.
Gilmore’s 75-foot heave at the buzzer glanced off the front of the rim.
Burnett drove from the left wing for a resounding slam dunk to start the extra period, and after Gilmore drove for a three-point play in the lane, the Spartans led 53-50 with 1:55 remaining.
Gilmore’s foul shot with 31 seconds to go lifted the lead to 54-51, but Punahou was unable to get an open look from the arc from that point. The Buffanblu opted to go for 3 rather than get a quick 2-pointer, and Kam’s off-balance 3 missed in the closing seconds.
Burnett made the second of his two foul shots with 3.1 seconds left to put the game out of reach.
Maryknoll raced to a 12-5 lead after hitting three treys in the opening quarter, but Punahou adjusted to the Spartans’ 1-3-1 zone and rallied in the second quarter. Kam sank all three of his 3-point bombs in the stanza, yet Maryknoll led 27-26 at intermission.
Maryknoll’s man-to-man defense clamped down in the third quarter. Punahou shot 29 percent from the field (2-for-7), and after Sean Ogata drove for a lefty layup, the Spartans led 38-31 early in the fourth.
Andrews threw down a breakaway dunk as the Buffanblu rallied with a 13-5 run. After Watanabe picked off a backcourt pass and hit a short jumper, Punahou led 44-43 with 2:26 to go in regulation.
A follow shot by Andrews with 1:04 to go gave the Buffanblu a three-point lead.
