BYU-Hawaii advances to NCAA II volleyball semifinal

Junior All-American hitter Shih Ting “Stella” Chen put down 37 kills with 22 digs to lead No. 4 Brigham Young-Hawaii to a 21-25, 32-30, 25-19, 25-27, 16-14 victory over unranked Ferris State in today’s NCAA II Women’s Volleyball Championship quarterfinal in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Junior middle Erh Fang Hsu added 15 kills for the Seasiders (28-1), winning their 21st in a row. BYUH advances to the national semifinals for the second straight season and will play West Texas A&M (35-3) Friday (1 p.m. Hawaii time).

The Lady Buffs swept LIU-Post 25-22, 25-17, 25-15 in today’s earlier quarterfinal at the U.S. Cellular Center.

Junior setter Ying Chun “Michelle” Chen finished with a double-double with 65 assists and 11 digs. Freshman hitter Noel Pauga added 10 kills and junior libero Bry Tatupu-Leopoldo had 22 of the team’s 95 digs.

Courtney Rehn had 18 kills, one of five Bulldog players in double-kill figures. Brandie Merren had a match-high 25 digs. 

BYU-Hawaii had a 14-6 lead in Set 5 only to see Ferris State hold off eight match points to tie at 14. Bulldog hitter Alexis Huntley’s hitting error gave the Seasiders their ninth match point with Stella Chen finally ending it with her 37th kill.
