Chow suspends backup QB Shutter four games for DUI

University of Hawaii quarterback Cayman Shutter will sit out the Warriors’ first four games of the season under suspension, the school announced today.

That means Shutter, a junior backup at the position, will miss at least the USC, Lamar, Nevada and Brigham Young games.

The suspension came after Shutter entered a no-contest plea this week in district court to a charge of drunken driving. Shutter was arrested March 30 on suspicion of drunken driving. 

Head coach Norm Chow said he has yet to determine whether Shutter will be allowed to participate in fall camp, which begins Aug. 1.

 “I hope Cayman learns from this experience and can become a better person because of this,” Chow said in a statement issued by the athletic department.  “It’s unfortunate what happened but hopefully this serves as a lesson to the rest of the team that their actions – on and off the field – may result in stiff penalties,” Chow said.

Athletic director Jim Donovan said, “In my communication with Cayman, he is remorseful and understands the seriousness of the situation. When a student-athlete takes responsibility and is remorseful, I’m more inclined to give them a second chance. I’ve made it clear with Cayman that there will not be a third chance. The four-game suspension is a significant penalty given the seriousness of the violation that occurred.”
