Hawaii rally falls short in 5-4 loss to No. 6 Oregon

Jimmie Sherfy got Kaeo Aliviado to fly out to left with the tying run on third base to preserve No. 6 Oregon’s 5-4 victory over Hawaii on Saturday night at Les Murakami Stadium.

A second consecutive sell-out crowd of 3,820 came alive with UH down 5-3 in the ninth.

Andre Real greeted Sherfy, a Louisville Slugger first team All-American, with a single and pinch hitter Marc Flores worked a seven-pitch walk.

Both runners moved up 90 feet on a passed ball and Real scored on an RBI ground-out by Trevor Podratz, moving Flores to third before Aliviado’s line drive to left was caught by Brett Thomas.

Catcher Tyler Young went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs and Jerry Kleman had three singles for UH, which out-hit Oregon 12-9.

Quintin Torres-Costa took the loss, allowing five runs on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts.

Ryon Healy hit three of Oregon’s six doubles.

Starter Tommy Thorpe went five innings, allowing one run on seven hits with two walks and four strikeouts to earn the win.

Game 3 of the series is Sunday at 1:05 p.m.
