Hawaii upsets UCLA in 5 in men’s volleyball

Sophomore opposite JP Marks put down 18 kills and sophomore hitter Brook Sedore added 17 to lead No. 13 Hawaii to a 23-25, 25-18, 19-25, 25-23, 15-12 victory over No. 6 UCLA in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s volleyball match tonight in Los Angeles.

Freshman hitter Siki Zarkovic added 15 kills for the Warriors (5-8, 4-6 MPSF) who won their first road match of the year, their first in 10 road contests dating back to last season. Marks, Sedore and Zarkovic combined for all six of Hawaii’s aces, each with two apiece.

Sedore was in on five of the Warriors’ 12 blocks. Junior libero Harrison Phelps had 10 of the team’s 40 digs as Hawaii went with a two-libero system.

For the Bruins (9-8, 5-6), Gonzalo Quiroga had a match-high 21 kills and Robart Page added 17. It was the 11th 5-setter for UCLA this season; the Bruins are 6-5 when the match has gone to five, including a five-set loss at Hawaii in last month’s Outrigger Invitational.

The Warriors are 3-5 in five-setters.

Hawaii continues its four-matches-in-five-days schedule with contests at No. 1 UC Irvine Monday and Tuesday.
