Hawaii-Hilo blanks Chaminade

Nathalie Palacios and Lauren Minami scored goals to give Hawaii-Hilo a 2-0 victory over Chaminade in women's soccer yesterday in Hilo.

Chelsea Gomez, Emily Cadiz and Minami were all credited with assists for the Vulcans (5-6-1, 4-4 Pacific West Conference). The Silverswords dropped to 2-6 and 2-4.

Vulcans rout Silverswords in men's match

Jose Vasquez and Jeremy Gwerder scored two goals each to lead Hawaii-Hilo past Chaminade 6-0 in men's soccer yesterday in Hilo.

Gabe Kallen-Brown and Drew Geis also scored for the Vulcans (5-4-1, 4-3-1 PacWest), while Cameron Castillo, David Garcia, Raydan Bala, Gerald Walsh and Vasquez added an assist apiece. The Silverswords dropped to 1-7 and 0-6. 

Oahu team wins national tennis title

A team of Oahu tennis players captured the title at the USTA League 3.5 National Championships last weekend in Indian Wells, Calif.

Oahu defeated Trumbull, Conn., in the final, 3-0.

The team, out of Kilauea Tennis Club, is made up of captain Dennis Yamamoto, Thomas Yoshida, David Chang, Conrado Ferrer, Paul Fujiyama, Mark Nakayama, Leroy Tavares, Elbert Tsuchimoto and Kevin Ching.

Cross country teams maintain rank

The Brigham Young-Hawaii men's and women's cross country teams retained their rankings in the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association West Region poll this week.

The Seasiders women's team is No. 4 and the BYUH men's team is No. 9.

Wahine 13th out of 14 golf teams

Hawaii placed 13th out of 14 teams in the Price's Give 'Em Five Intercollegiate golf tournament at Las Cruces, N.M., yesterday.

The Wahine finished at 61-over 925, 59 shots behind tournament winner and host New Mexico State (2-over 866).

Ka'aili Britos was Hawaii's top finisher. She tied for 50th at 14-over 230. Baylor's Lene Hafsten-Morch took individual honors at 7-under 209 after yesterday's 7-under 65.

La Pietra alumnae Ashlee Nagamine of Cal State Northridge finished tied for 22nd at 8-over 224. Hayley Young, a Mid-Pacific Institute graduate, tied for 28th at 9-over 225.


» Honolulu's Alexandra White tied for 11th at the Monteverde Academy Junior All-Star Invitational, which ended Monday at Mission Inn Resort & Club in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. White, a high school sophomore who is home-schooled, shot rounds of 76-73-78 to finish 14 shots out of first. Players from 20 states and five countries participated.

» Trey Kidd and Brittany Fan qualified for the U.S. Junior Masters at last week's fifth annual Kiahuna Junior Classic on Kauai. The USJM will be Dec. 20-22 at the TPC Sawgrass courses in Ponte Vedra, Fla. It was the last chance for golfers ages 13-18 to qualify for the Hali'imaile Pineapple Tournament of Champions, Dec. 4-5 at Wailea Emerald. Those 12-and-under have one more chance to qualify and earn player of the year points, at Turtle Bay, Nov. 20-21.
