Wagner named coach of the year

Brigham Young-Hawaii men's basketball coach was named the NCAA Division II CaptainU College Coach of the Year yesterday after leading the Seasiders to their first NCAA II national title game appearance.

"I am really honored by this award," said Wagner, the 21-year BYUH coach who received it for the first time. "There are so many great coaches at this level that to be singled out for this honor is a real thrill. But it wouldn't have happened without a great bunch of players that really came together at the right time to make a great run in the NCAA tournament."

UHH hoops signs two

The Hawaii-Hilo men's basketball team yesterday announced the addition of Michael Melonas and Paul Batausa of Ventura (Calif.) College to play for the 2011-12 season.

Melonas, a 6-foot-7 forward, averaged 10.3 points and 7.4 rebounds with a .642 field-goal percentage last season. Batausa, a 5-foot-7 point guard, averaged 3.8 points and 2.6 assists.

Pampulov steps down at HPU

Hawaii Pacific men's and women's tennis coach Stefan Pampulov has resigned, the university announced Friday.

Under Pampulov, a former All-America player at HPU, both Sea Warrior teams reached the Division II national semifinals within the past five years.

Assistant coaches Lauren Conching and Hendrik Bode were promoted up from Pampulov's staff to take over the women's and men's teams, respectively.

Dolan, Michael brothers in final

The Hawaii-dominated U.S. men's K4 kayak has advanced to today's B final in the ICF World Cup stop in Duisburg, Germany.

The U.S. team includes Pat Dolan of Kailua and brothers Luke and Jake Michael, two Australians who now live in Hawaii. The fourth member is Morgan House of Gainesville, Ga.

Ryan Dolan of Kailua will complete in today's K1M 200-meter race.
