Hawaii native Carissa Moore has claimed her second world surfing crown.
At only 21-years-old, Moore won the 2013 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Women’s World Title today at the EDP Cascais Girls Pro in Guincho, Portugal after Tyler Wright , 19, was eliminated by fellow Australian Sally Fitzgibbons in the quarterfinals of the event.
The Punahou graduate was in the water for her semifinal heat when the decision came through.
"I can’t really speak right now because I’m so happy," Moore said in a news release from the ASP. "I woke up this morning listening to music and I started crying because I really felt like today was my day. I’ve been supported so much by my Dad and boyfriend and sister and all my family and friends. This is really special for me because I get to share it with all of them."
Moore and Wright collected five victories of the first seven events between them in what the ASP called "one of the closest battles for the world surfing crown."
Moore scored a two-wave total of 13.80 on Friday to edge Australia’s Stephanie Gilmore’s 13.35, advancing to the Quarterfinals. Heading into it, Moore was just 200 points ahead of Wright.
"This title is much sweeter as it was so close with Tyler (Wright)," Moore said. "She’s so young, but so strong and fearless when it comes to competition. She can always come back and really pushed me to work my hardest this year. I won some different events this season and it all amounted to a really meaningful year for me."
Moore won her first ASP Women’s World Title in 2011 at age 18, the youngest surfer ever to win the trophy.
In addition, Moore also won the EDP Cascais Pro with a final score of 10.44 over Australia’s Sally Fitzgibbons’ 9.70.
Coco Ho, another Hawaii surfer, took third place after falling short to Sally Fitzgibbons in the semifinals.
