Two goals down, one to go for the Kapolei Hurricanes.
Coach Thomas Ebanez’s team rallied past Kalaheo 9-4 on Saturday in the OIA Division II championship game at Hans L’Orange Park. The ‘Canes went unbeaten in 13 league games while earning the crown, nailing both goals.
The third goal? To win the D-II state championship in two weeks at Hilo’s Dr. Francis Wong Stadium.
Kapolei did it with dogged determination at the plate and on the mound. Junior Kamea Wong struggled with control early on, but went 6 innings, striking out nine and walking six. His fastball and curve were on point during warm-ups in the bullpen.
“He was really hitting his spots, but I think he was kind of nervous (during the game) until he started finding it,” catcher Mykah Kuratani said.
Ebanez and his staff kept a close eye on the southpaw.
“There were a couple of instances where we thought about pulling him, but he’s such a competitor. He begged us to leave him in,” the longtime coach said. “When a dog wants a bone, you give it to him.”
“I appreciate that they let me stay in,” Wong said. “I had to push through it.”
Kapolei swept their two regular-season games, but Kalaheo jumped on Wong right away. Leadoff hitter Tennison Cantrell walked and scored on Kaliu Lapera’s double to left. After Thomas Capllonch blooped a single to right and Kekai Smith followed with another opposite-field single to right, scoring Lapera from third base for a 2-0 lead. On the same play, however, Capllonch was thrown out at home plate.
The Mustangs tied the game in the fourth when Cantrell walked with one out, advanced to second on a walk by Lapera, stole third base and then scored on a single by Capllonch to make it 4-all.
Kapolei then strung together a five-run, five-hit attack in the bottom of the fourth. Fujii’s fielder’s-choice grounder with the bases loaded brought Stoyanow home for a 5-4 Kapolei lead.
Corey Slade then singled to center, bringing Manuha-Diaz and Fujii home for a three-run cushion. Moments later, Joe Uesato spanked a single to left, and Slade and Kuratani raced home to make it 9-4.
