Nevada coach Chris Ault came up with the pistol partly to get his quarterback more involved in all phases of the offense.

RENO, Nev. >> Nevada football coach Chris Ault has agreed to a two-year extension that will bring his salary to $535,000 by 2015. That’s about half the average salary in the Mountain West Conference where he’ll begin his 28th season coaching the Wolf Pack next season.

Athletic Director Cary Groth announced the deal Thursday subject to approval of the state regents. She says they are fortunate to have him as they transition out of the Western Athletic Conference.

Ault forfeited a salary increase and took a voluntary pay cut last year.

The Reno Gazette-Journal reports that under his current contract, he’ll make a base salary of $460,000 in 2012 with annual increases of $25,000 through 2015. The average head coach salary in the Mountain West last season was just above $1 million.
