No. 11 Hawaii upsets No. 3 UCLA in volleyball

Brook Sedore tied his season high with 24 kills and No. 11 Hawaii upset No. 3 UCLA 25-23, 26-24, 25-27, 25-22 in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation volleyball match Friday at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Siki Zarkovic added 15 kills and Taylor Averill added 12 for the Rainbow Warriors (10-6, 8-5 MPSF), who snapped a two-match losing streak. It was the first time Hawaii had defeated UCLA (13-4, 10-3) in MPSF play at home since 2008.

For the Bruins, Gonzalo Quiroga had a team-high 19 kills and Robart Page added 17. UCLA had won its last three, including a five-setter at Stanford Monday.

Hawaii had one swing at completing the sweep when leading 25-24 in Set 3 on an ace by Nick West. It would have been the first time that the Warriors had won in straight sets since 2011 in Westwood, Calif.; the last time UH swept at the Stan Sheriff Center was in 2006.

Instead, the Bruins answered with a 3-0 run, taking the set when Zarkovic hit long.

Sedore had nine of his kills in Set 1, with no errors in 13 swings. He finished with five errors on 42 attempts.

West finished with two of the team’s six aces. Averill was in on six of the team’s 11.5 blocks.

The teams meet again at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Sheriff Center
