No. 4 Cal Poly edges Hawaii 3-2 to open series

Matt Imhof and Reed Reilly held Hawaii hitless over the final seven innings and Tim Wise singled home the go-ahead run in the top of the sixth inning to help No. 4 Cal Poly beat Hawaii 3-2 on Friday night at Les Murakami Stadium.

UH (14-17, 2-5 Big West) lost its fourth in a row and dropped to 3-8 in one-run games.

Imhof improved to 7-2 overall and Reilly earned his sixth save for the Mustangs (28-5, 6-1), who remain tied with UC Irvine for first in the conference.

Stephen Ventimilia had two hits and scored both of UH’s runs. Kaeo Aliviado went 2-for-4 with an RBI double in the second inning to give UH a 2-0 lead.

Cal Poly took advantage of a Hawaii error in the fifth to tie the game at 2-2. Jimmy Allen led off with a double and scored when Adam Hurley misplayed a fly ball in right, allowing Wise to reach second.

Wise scored on a bunt to tie the game at 2-2.

Matt Cooper (3-3) struck out eight in seven innings and gave up two earned runs on six hits with one walk to take the loss.

The series continues Saturday night at 6:35. Senior Scott Kuzminsky (3-3, 3.30 ERA) will start his first game in three weeks for the ‘Bows.
