By Star-Advertiser staff

POSTED:

Parker McLachlin will be taking more time off work from the PGA Tour now that he and wife, Kristy, have welcomed their first child.

Makena Marie McLachlin was born last Wednesday. She weighed 7 pounds, 6 ounces and was 21 inches long.

McLachlin has been home with his wife since withdrawing from the Reno-Tahoe Open a month ago.

The Punahou graduate is not in this week's Wyndham Championship in North Carolina, but Castle graduate Dean Wilson is. Wilson stands 105th on the PGA Tour's FedEx Cup points list. The top 125 are eligible to play in The Barclays next week. It is the first stop in the FedEx Cup Playoffs. After Barclays, the top 100 can play in the Deutsche Bank Championship, the top 70 in the BMW Championship and the top 30 in The Tour Championship. McLachlin can start up again Sept. 30 in the PGA Tour Fall Series.

Golfing for wellness

Maui's Royal Kaanapali Golf Course has introduced a fit club to "promote health and wellness through golf."

The club charges participants $50 a month. They are allowed to walk the course's first six holes while they play daily after 4 p.m., based on availability. Pull carts are available for $10.

The club is averaging more than 750 walking rounds a month. For information, visit kaanapaligolfresort.com or call (808) 661-3691 on Maui.

Short putts

» Hawaii's Michelle Wie and Kristina Merkle are in the LPGA's Safeway Classic, which begins tomorrow at Pumpkin Ridge in Oregon.

» Kevin Shimomura will represent the Aloha Section PGA at the 34th Callaway Golf PGA Assistant Championship in November, after winning a qualifier last week at Ko Olina Golf Club. Shimomura, from Ko Olina, shot rounds of 76-75 for a 7-over-par 151. He beat Pearl Country Club's Regan Lee with a birdie on the playoff hole to earn the section's qualifying spot. Lee (80--151) is first alternate.
