Friday was a day of fantastic finishes for the Wall ohana.
Anuhea Wall was a big factor in Konawaena's girls basketball championship win over Punahou with 10 points, three assists, two steals and a block. She was named to the all-tournament team. Meanwhile, her sister, freshman Makani Wall, watched from the bench and is an up-and-coming Wildcat.
Their cousin, Lehua Wall, paddled with the winning varsity mixed crew from Kamehameha. The crew edged Seabury Hall by 4 seconds in the state championships at Keehi Lagoon.
Erica Ellis has been a quiet highlight for Lanakila Baptist in basketball this season.
The junior swingman averaged 11 points per game while the Warriors battled in Division II and finished with a 3-11 record.
She caught the attention of plenty of watchers at the Mufi Hannemann Jamboree on Saturday, including the host, former Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann, who is part of the selection committee for Team Aloha.
Ellis, who also plays volleyball and soccer, said she'd welcome an invitation to play for the all-star team this summer. She plans to keep playing all three sports despite the long commute from her neighborhood (Waianae) to club practices in town. That adds up to workouts seven days a week, by her own choice.
She plans to stay at Lanakila Baptist in Ewa, though the team had just seven players this season. In the fall, she'll play volleyball.
"Then I'll play soccer for Pac-Five. If not, it's basketball or get a job," she said.
The McKinley Tigers haven't gone back to the traditional black Chuck Taylor All-Stars for sneakers, but their old-school style of play has already yielded a state-tourney berth.
Bob Morikuni's squad came within an incredible defensive play by Farrington's Ryan Reyes of advancing to the finals of the Oahu Interscholastic Association White Conference playoffs. Quite impressive for a team without significant size in the starting lineup, which averages about 5-foot-9.
The 49-48 loss to No. 4 Farrington on Saturday means the Tigers play another surprising team, Kalaheo, today in an elimination game.
