Former Major League Baseball pitcher Roger Clemens speaks to the media outside federal court in Washington

NEW YORK >> A judge is asking former baseball pitcher Roger Clemens to settle a long-running legal battle with a former Yankees strength coach.

Clemens and Brian McNamee met briefly with the federal judge behind closed doors on Tuesday in Brooklyn.

McNamee’s 2009 lawsuit alleges Clemens defamed him after the trainer told federal investigators and Congress that he had injected Clemens with steroids and human growth hormone.

The judged ruled previously that Clemens has to turn over hundreds of emails and other documents to McNamee.

The judge interrupted a hearing on the documents Tuesday to bring both sides into her chambers for negotiations. The parties are due back in court June 10.

Clemens is a seven-time Cy Young winner who pitched for the Red Sox, Yankees, Blue Jays and Astros.
