Roosevelt survived a giant double-overtime scare from Farrington on Wednesday night to remain in the chase for the Oahu Interscholastic Association girls basketball championship.
Senior guard Ashley Kiko scored seven points in the second overtime, including five of six free throws, to push the No. 5 Rough Riders to the 55-51 semifinal victory at the Radford gym.
Roosevelt (12-0) almost didn’t get to overtime, having to fight back from a 36-27 deficit early in the fourth quarter. That’s when Alliya Gabriel got hot by hitting two 17-footers and a 10-foot baseline stop and pop during an 11-1 run for a temporary 38-37 lead.
“Alliya hit those big shots, that’s her No. 1 shot, the baseline,” Kiko said. “We knew they (the Governors) were going to bring their A-game and we knew it was going to be physical. We wanted to make sure we could play physical too.”
Farrington (10-3) attacked the basket all night with conviction and also held Roosevelt star post Keala Quinlan to just eight points. Led by Molimau Heimuli’s 17 points and 17 rebounds and Lokelani Pacheco’s 13 points and inside intensity, the Govs’ power offense coupled with tenacious defense nearly did the trick.
“We didn’t box out and we gave them too many good looks at the basket (when the game was on the line),” Farrington head coach Caroline Tatupu said. “We made some unnecessary fouls. We had the lead, but couldn’t put ’em away.”
Tatupu acknowledged that the Governors played solidly, but added, “I was hoping for a chance at the championship.”
Kiko finished with 20 points, including a clutch 12-for-17 at the free-throw line. Gabriel also had 20 points.
“When the ball is always in her hands, she’s going to be taking a lot of free throws,” Rough Riders head coach Hinano Higa said about Kiko. “We picked Alliya as our impact player of the game, and D-Dre Wright did a great job guarding Heimuli, who could easily have scored 25 points. She’s a big girl and a dominant post. This team, they love each other and everybody plays their roles really well. We’re looking forward to Saturday.”
That’s when Roosevelt will play in the league title game against Leilehua. The Govs will play Radford for third place. All four semifinal teams have qualified for the state tournament.
Despite not getting many quality scoring opportunities, Quinlan was immense off the boards with 16 rebounds.
The Rough Riders held a 22-17 halftime lead, but Farrington’s Pacheco scored eight points in a 17-3 run that pushed the Govs ahead 34-25 with about six minutes left. During the surge, Shayla Cabato-Machado hit a 3-pointer that had made it 27-25 after three quarters.
With the score knotted at 39 at the end of regulation, Quinlan’s successful layup didn’t count because the ball left her hands a split second after the buzzer.
In the second overtime, Gabriel’s rebound bucket off a 3-point miss put Roosevelt ahead for good at 48-46 — before Kiko’s clutch free throws finished off Farrington.
Still, the Governors trailed by just two points, 53-51, with eight seconds left. The Rough Riders’ Sadie Luiz then put the finishing touches on the win with an inside hoop as time expired.
Leilehua 31, No. 7 Radford 26
Chyel Palmer hit two clutch shots to keep the Mules ahead in the late stages of the upset victory. Tywanna Abbott had 11 points in the win.
With the victory, the Mules (11-2) move on to the OIA title game against Roosevelt on Saturday. Kyle Johnson scored nine points for the Rams (11-1).
