Former University of Hawaii All-American Kolten Wong has agreed to a five-year contract extension with the St. Louis Cardinals that also includes a club option for a sixth year.
The Cardinals announced the extension at a press conference this morning but did not disclose financial terms of the deal.
ESPN.com reports the deal is worth $25.5 million with a $12.5 million team option for 2021.
Wong has been the everyday starter at second base each of the last two seasons with St. Louis. He hit .262 with 28 doubles, four triples, 11 homers and 71 runs scored last season. In 2014, he hit .249 with 12 homers and 42 RBIs and finished third in the National League Rookie of the Year voting.
Wong was a first-round pick of the Cardinals in the 2011 MLB Draft. The Kamehameha-Hawaii graduate played three seasons at the University of Hawaii and was named a first-team All-American as a junior by both the ABCA and Perfect Game.
He wanted to be lead off batter today at their first game in Jupiter, Florida…..did he do it?
