MIAMI >> A boxing center at a Miami-Dade County park is being renamed for Muhammad Ali, whose championship professional career was launched in South Florida.

The center at Tropical Park will now be called the “Muhammad Ali Boxing Center” after its name was officially changed by the Miami-Dade County Commission. Commissioner Javier Souto says the move ensures Ali’s name will live on through the training of future generations of boxers.

Ali died June 3 at age 74 after a battle with Parkinson’s Disease. Early in his career, he trained at the 5th Street Gym in Miami Beach, which has since moved to a new location. One of Ali’s greatest victories was in 1964 over then-heavyweight champion Sonny Liston in Miami Beach.
