Rainbow Wahine basketball beats Cal Poly

Hawaii senior Destiny King scored eight of her 12 points in the fourth quarter and the Rainbow Wahine basketball team earned its third straight win with a 64-58 victory at Cal Poly today in San Luis Obispo, Calif.

UH guard Marissa Wimbley hit three of UH’s eight 3-pointers and finished with 11 points and the Wahine (13-9, 6-3 Big West) picked up its first win at the Mott Athletic Center in program history.

UH rose into third place in the Big West standings continues its road trip with a game at UC Santa Barbara (8-14, 5-3) on Saturday.

The Wahine overcame a career-best 31 point performance by Cal Poly guard Dynn Leaupepe. Beth Balbierz added 10 for the Mustangs (10-11, 3-5).

Cal Poly center Hannah Gilbert, the conference’s leading rebounder entering the game, went to the bench with her second foul with 2 minutes left in the first quarter, but Leaupepe powered the Mustangs in the second quarter with 12 points and her jumper gave Cal Poly a 31-29 lead at halftime.

The Mustangs opened up a four-point lead in the third quarter, but Wimbley hit two 3-pointers late in the period and UH took a 46-45 lead into the fourth.

Cal Poly edged ahead 47-46 early in the final period before UH point guard Olivia Crawford hit a pull-up jumper then drained a 3-pointer on consecutive possessions to give UH the lead.

After a Wimbley 3-pointer gave UH a seven-point cushion, Leaupepe scored on back-to-back possessions to cut the lead to 56-53. But King answered with a jumper and a drive off the wing to put UH back in control.

    Watched this game and both teams couldn’t make the baskets early on. Wahine will have another competitive game against UCSB. LBS beats CSUN in OT and of course the best team in the conference UCR beat Davis. Can see UCR going undefeated and making it to the NCAA tournament.Wahine ?????
