Squier, Kuzminsky throw shutouts as Hawaii sweeps doubleheader
Hawaii junior Scott Squier tossed a three-hit shutout and Austin Wobrock doubled and scored the only run of the game as Hawaii defeated New York Institute of Technology 1-0 in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday at Les Murakami Stadium.
Senior Scott Kuzminsky made it a sweep of the Bears with a 14-strikeout performance in the second game that Hawaii won 11-0 to improve to 18-25 overall for the season.
Squier (4-4) allowed three hits in seven innings with seven strikeouts as Hawaii has yet to allow a run in the series against NYIT.
Jake Axley (0-4) allowed five hits and three walks with no strikeouts in six innings for NYIT.
Kaeo Aliviado had two of Hawaii’s five hits.
Squier gave up a leadoff double to Joshua Canabal in the top of the seventh before striking out the final two batters to end it.
The UH offense roared to life in the second game with 14 hits, including four doubles.
Aliviado went 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI and Marc Flores was 2-for-4 with a double, two runs and two RBIs.
Stephen Ventimilia went 2-for-5 with a double and two runs scored and Trevor Podratz reached base three times, finishing 2-for-4 with a double, walk, two runs and two RBIs.
Kuzminsky (4-5) tossed his second nine-inning shutout of the season, scattering seven hits with no walks.
The final game of the series is Sunday at 1:05 p.m.
