The Hawaii men’s basketball team won its third straight road game with a 87-76 decision against UC Riverside at SRC Arena on Thursday night in Riverside, Calif.

UH (17-7, 6-4 Big West) moved into a tie for third place and matched its overall win total of last season with six regular-season games remaining.

Senior forward Christian Standhardinger led the fourth-place Rainbow Warriors with 27 points and 13 rebounds. Shooting guard Garrett Nevels added 20 points, wing Brandon Spearman scored 11 and point guard Keith Shamburger directed matters on the floor effectively with 11 points and 10 assists.

The ‘Bows shook off a recent shooting slump, connecting on seven of 15 3-pointers and 53.7 percent of their shots overall to 42.2 percent for Riverside (8-16, 3-7). That was despite a subpar game by forward Isaac Fotu (eight points, two rebounds), who’s been UH’s best scoring option in conference play. Nevels went 4-for-6 on 3-pointers to help make up the slack.

UH led by as many as 13 points in the first half, but had a five-minute field-goal drought to end the period. It saw its six-point halftime lead trimmed to three early in the second half, but the ‘Bows responded with three 3-pointers by Nevels in a three-minute span to push the lead back to 54-41 with 13:18 to play, and they weren’t seriously threatened again.

UCR center Chris Patton led the Highlanders with 21 points and forward Taylor Johns, who was held to four points in UH’s 100-69 win in Honolulu last month, scored 19 points, grabbed nine rebounds and blocked six shots in the loss.

UH continues play on Saturday at Cal State Fullerton (8-15, 3-6).
