UH starter Quintin Torres-Costa was back pitching at Les Murakami Stadium on Saturday night for the first time since striking out 13 in six hitless innings for Waiakea in the state championship game last year.

An MRI revealed a small ligament tear in the left elbow of Hawaii freshman pitcher Quintin Torres-Costa, who will miss “several weeks,” according to coach Mike Trapasso.

Torres-Costa suffered the injury in batting practice prior to Friday’s game against Bradley at the UNLV Rebel Classic.

“Best case scenario is he’s out for several weeks,” Trapasso said today. “It’s not (a tear) that they think would require surgery but there’s so much swelling in there that he’ll be reexamined in the middle of next week.”

Torres-Costa is the third UH left-hander to go down with an injury. Two-year starter Jarrett Arakawa has missed the entire year with a torn labrum that required surgery and junior Andrew Jones suffered a ligament tear in his elbow during the opening series of the season against Oregon.

A decision is expected in the next two weeks if Jones will have surgery on his elbow.
