The mixed martial arts community waited years for a debut that lasted 70 seconds.

Hilo’s Reagan Penn didn’t need long to match the hype, using his slick jiujitsu to tap out Paul Gardiner in just over a minute in one of the feature fights for ProElite’s mixed martial arts event on Saturday night at the Blaisdell Arena.

While B.J. Penn won titles and became one of the sport’s biggest stars, there were always whispers of how good younger brother Reagan might be.

The first step to figuring that out went smoothly as the 30-year-old Penn survived an early takedown to quickly take Gardiner’s back and finish the fight.

"That was crazy, guys; I did what I tried to do," Penn said, addressing a crowd of 3,500 after the fight. "I didn’t expect to get taken down, so I have to hand it to him."

The only shorter fight of the night was the main event, as Maui’s Kendall Grove closed the show with a quick submission victory over Joe Riggs.

Riggs, who dropped to 34-14, rushed in for a takedown when Grove sunk in a deep guillotine choke that forced Riggs to tap immediately, 59 seconds into the bout.

"That’s why I was the main event, because I bring it," said Grove, who improved to 13-9 in his first fight since being cut by the UFC.

Andrei Arlovski, who once held the UFC heavyweight title, nearly saw his losing streak run to five.

Heavy underdog Ray Lopez survived a mount and ground-and-pound to eventually get Arlovski’s back and nearly choked him out before the first round ended.

After a sluggish second round from both fighters, Arlovski found his groove in the third just long enough to finish off Lopez with strikes to earn the TKO victory.

"After losing four in a row, I feel (expletive) awesome," Arlovski said.

Former University of Hawaii linebacker Jake Heun nearly pulled off the upset of the night, coming close to stopping Mark Ellis with a kimura in the second round.

Ellis, the 2009 NCAA heavyweight wrestling champion in Missouri, rolled over and eventually got out of the hold, then quickly transitioned to a rear-naked choke to finish Heun at 2:29 of the second round.

Heun dropped to 1-1, while Ellis was making his professional debut.

Waianae’s Raquel Pa‘aluhi proved to be a tough test for Olympic medalist Sara McMann, who called Pa‘aluhi "the toughest fighter I’ve ever faced."

Pa‘aluhi survived multiple takedowns and slams and, at times, got the better of the exchanges standing.

In the end, however, McMann caught Pa‘aluhi with a cross and eventually finished her with an arm-lock submission at 2:53 of the third round.

""It’s the first time in a fight I felt someone hurt from my (strikes)," McMann said. "(Pa‘aluhi) is so strong and technical. … She’s a beast."

Drew McFedries started the main card with a second-round TKO victory over Garrett Olsen. Olsen was a late replacement for Waianae’s Kala Hose, who pulled out two weeks before the fight.
