Hawaii’s Lorens Chan and Allisen Corpuz earned Rolex Junior All-American honors this week.
Chan, an ‘Iolani senior, is on the second team, and Corpuz, a Punahou eighth-grader, is honorable mention.
Chan, 17, is 22nd in the latest Polo Golf rankings and heading to UCLA on a golf scholarship. He finished second at this year’s Junior PGA Championship and also had fifth-place finishes at the Under Armour/Hunter Mahan Championship and AJGA Junior Challenge, and a sixth at the Junior Players Championship.
Corpuz, 13, is ranked 40th among the girls. She had seven top-10 finishes in AJGA events this year, including thirds at the AJGA Junior at Centennial and Ping Phoenix Junior.
There were 96 juniors honored between the ages of 13 and 19. They come from 24 states and eight foreign countries. Former Hawaii resident Kyung Kim, now living in Arizona, is on the girls first team.
Hamamoto in third at Florida qualifier
Former University of Hawaii golfer Jarett Hamamoto fired a 4-under-par 68 for the second straight day Wednesday and is tied for third at the PGA Tour’s First Qualifying Stage in Lakeland, Fla.
Hamamoto, from Hilo, was the 2001 and ’02 state high school champion while playing for Waiakea. He is two shots out of first at the halfway point. There are 75 players at Lakeland and the top 22 and ties will advance to the second stage next month.
Leilehua graduate Nick Mason, who golfed at Hawaii-Hilo, is tied for 30th at Dayton, Nev. He opened with a 67 on Tuesday, but followed with a 76. The top 22 in a field of 76 also advance from there.
Tadd Fujikawa is not doing as well in Kannapolis, N.C. The 20-year-old opened with an even-par 71, but followed with a 76 and is tied for 62nd in a field of 76 players. The top 22 advance.
Tony Finau, who represents Turtle Bay, is tied for 25th at McKinney, Texas, after rounds of 76-70. The top 18 of 62 advance.
UH women withdraw
The University of Hawaii women’s golf team withdrew from last week’s Price’s Give ‘Em Five Invitational in Las Cruces, N.M.
Senior Erika Lundberg got sick after the first round and could not compete in the last two. Sophomore Liana Otake also had to withdraw after injuring her wrist.
Individually, junior Ka‘ili Britos shot in the 60s for the first time this season, finishing 43rd with rounds of 76-83-69. Sophomore Charlee Kapiioho had the best tournament score of her career with a 14-over 230 and tied for 49th. Sophomore Madeleine Ystrom was the only other player to finish, at 232.
Hawaii hosts the Rainbow Wahine Invitational, Nov. 1-2at Kapolei.

The 15th annual golf tournament to benefit the Variety School of Hawaii will be Nov. 10 at Ewa Beach Golf Club. There is an 11:30 a.m. shotgun start. The cost is $450 for a team of three or $150 per golfer. Call the school (732-2835) for more information.
