Josh Ko buried a 17-foot pull-up jumper from the right wing as time expired, lifting No. 8 Kalaheo over 10th-ranked Moanalua 31-29 in a thriller at Na Menehune’s gym.
Ko’s shot put a slight damper on senior night for Moanalua, which had about 700 spirited fans in the bleachers.
“No matter what, I felt we were going to win in the end. Even if I didn’t make the shot, I felt like we were going to win in overtime,” said Ko, a 6-foot-1 junior guard.
Derick Morgan had 11 points as Kalaheo improved to 9-1 in the Oahu Interscholastic Association East (31-5 overall), closing in on a top seed for the White Conference (Division II) playoffs. The Mustangs will host McKinley, another one-loss White team, tomorrow.
Moanalua fell to 7-3 in the OIA East (18-10 overall), but had already sealed second place in the Red East standings.
“It feels good. The kids battled. We missed some free throws down the stretch, but you’ve got to give Moanalua credit. That’s a great team in a great building,” Mustangs coach Alika Smith said. “Our best player decided he didn’t want to go into overtime.”
Ko’s shot came off a play that Smith had drawn up at practice on Tuesday. Center Nainoa Frank (eight points, eight rebounds) set the pick for the left, but Ko went right and hit the rainbow shot with defender Kreig Kepa right in his grill.
“I like the defense we played in the second half,” Moanalua coach Greg Tacon said a moment before kicking off senior-night festivities for his team. “We didn’t shoot well in the first half, but we fought back and made a game of it. Their offensive rebounding was huge. (Frank) didn’t grab every rebound, but he got his hands on so many missed shots.”
It was a defensive stranglehold for both teams all night. Moanalua shot 2-for-16 from the field in the first half against Kalaheo’s mix of man and zone defenses. The visitors led 20-9 at the break despite 1-for-8 accuracy from 3-point range.
The Mustangs led by as many as 13 before Moanalua rallied. Chris Hammond (11 points) sank two treys to spark a third-quarter rally.
Frank, a 6-6 junior, was a major factor in the paint. With Kalaheo clinging to a two-point lead, he blocked Hammond’s reverse layup. Ko hit one of two free-throw tries with 27 seconds left to push Kalaheo’s lead to 29-26.
Hammond then drilled a 23-foot trey from the left wing to tie the game at 29-all with 9.4 seconds remaining. Kalaheo called timeout and set up the final play.
Freshman Eliet Donley added nine points for Moanalua.
Kalaheo outrebounded Moanalua 35-30 and finished at 22 percent from the field (11-for-50) against Moanalua’s man defense, including 1-for-17 from 3-point range. Ko and Morgan shot a combined 7-for-27 from the floor.
Moanalua shot 22 percent from the field (8-for-36) and committed 10 turnovers to Kalaheo’s 14.
