Farrington's Tyler Taumua picked up yardage in the fourth quarter on Saturday night on his way to 166 rushing yards in the Governors' 28-7 victory over Moanalua.

Abraham Silva rushed for 206 yards and Tyler Taumua galloped — and sometimes hurdled — for 166 more as No. 2 Farrington pulled away from pesky Moanalua for a 28-7 homecoming win Saturday night at Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium.

Farrington improved to 3-0 in the OIA Red East (5-0 overall), while Moanalua dropped to 2-1 (2-3 overall).

The combined work of the elite runners — two touchdowns by Taumua and one by Silva — and their "Bamboolas" offensive line was noteworthy to say the least. It’s been a long time since two Governors rushed for that much yardage in a single game.

"It hasn’t happened since I’ve been the coach," former running back Randall Okimoto said. "Especially with the rain, we knew we’d smashmouth. I think God made the decision for us."

Taumua had his biggest output since returning from an early-season shoulder injury. He likes sharing the load with Silva.

"Moanalua is a physical team," said Taumua, a 5-foot-10, 202-pound senior. "We didn’t want to waste a series or a snap. Our O-line kept pushing."

Silva and his teammates stayed the course despite a rugged Moanalua defense led by Scott Pagano, an oral commit to Clemson, and sophomore D.J. Leatimua, a brick wall at linebacker.

"The O-line did their job. The first half, we struggled a little bit, but we told each other we have to shake it off and keep each other going," Silva said.

On a rainy night in Makiki, the Govs needed every one of those yards. At one point, a 14-0 lead, soft rain and a slick football had them unraveling. A punt snap sailed over Taumua’s head, recovered by Ryan Sanford at the Farrington 10-yard line.

Micah Kaneshiro scored one play later on a sneaky fake and run up the gut, and Moanalua trailed 14-7 with 5:19 left in the third quarter.

Then came a heavy downpour, and on first down, Govs quarterback Montana Liana fumbled at the Farrington 19-yard line. Ratu Mafaleo recovered for Na Menehune, but on the ensuing play, running back Ishmil Scott was stripped of the ball and Govs defensive lineman Nolan Eseroma grabbed it to end the threat.

Farrington straightened out its butterfingers problem and regained control by driving 77 yards in 21 plays. Consecutive fumbles by Liana on the snap nearly derailed the drive, but the Govs converted on fourth and short three times before Silva ripped a 10-yard TD run.

Farrington led 21-7 with 11:03 remaining.

After a Moanalua four and out, Farrington drove for another touchdown to ice the win. Taumua, who was whistled earlier for hurdling a would-be tackler, merely skipped over a defender on the ground on his way to a 4-yard touchdown that gave the Govs a commanding 28-7 lead with 2:50 left.

The first half was defensive struggle. Fittingly, the first touchdown came on a defensive play, Breiden Fehoko’s 14-yard interception return on a screen pass by Micah Kaneshiro. Farrington led 7-0 with 3:10 left in the first quarter.

Moanalua’s offense had one first down in the first half, but the Govs had almost as much trouble moving the ball consistently. Farrington defensive back Setefano Lavatai returned a pick 33 yards to the Moanalua 20, setting up a 3-yard touchdown blast by fullback Jackie Anakalea. However, the play was reversed after officials had a conference, ruling Anakalea’s knee had touched the ground at the 2-yard line.

On fourth down, Taumua got the ball on the right side but was stuffed by Moanalua linebacker J.J. Leatimua. The 6-foot-2, 232-pound sophomore’s stop ended Farrington’s last scoring threat of the half.

Moanalua got a break with 1:19 to go in the half when linebacker Jonah Ramelb recovered a fumble by Taumua at the Govs’ 47-yard line. But Na Menehune were called for an illegal block and went backwards before taking a knee at their 32-yard line to end the first half.

A pensive homecoming crowd had reason to be nervous. Last year, Moanalua led in the final minute before then-quarterback Travis Tamapua scored a touchdown for a 28-24 Govs’ win.

This time, Liana, only a sophomore, was just happy to get through a rainy night with a win, even after completing just two passes.

"I kept wiping my hands," he said. "We had good blocking up front and they’re two great running backs. Scott (Pagano) is pretty good, and our O-line held them."
